Nuclear Recitals: Deep Listening in Time of Great Unrest

An immersive, multisensory, surround-sound and visual deep listening experience by O /TYPONEXUS.

Stay Close to Anything That Makes You Glad To Be Alive.” ~ Hafez

Nuclear Recitals: Deep Listening in Time of Great Unrest is centered on an immersive, 40-minute multimedia experience centering on a live piano performance recorded inside a nuclear cooling tower. Remastered in 10-channel Dolby Atmos surround sound to replicate the tower’s original acoustics, this climate justice project features the music of continuous pianist Lubomyr Melnyk alongside atmospheric visuals and a central Dreamachine to ease participants into a relaxed, meditative state. The program opens with immersive live ambient music, vocals, and movement, and concludes with a community discussion designed to spark conversation around interconnectedness and healing.

IN DEPTH:
This is the inaugural public opportunity to hear the remastered, high-fidelity, full-length version of Nuclear Recitals, Vol. I music compilation.

The experience uplifts us individually and collectively through profound expressions of hope and beauty, and calls for contemplation, discussion and action from communities everywhere to forge constructive paths forward through creative thinking and collaboration.

Deep listening:
Enveloped in cascading sounds, fascinating Dreamachine effects and celestial visuals, participants are invited on a poignant journey of Deep Listening – a conscious mind-body practice developed by experimental sound trailblazer Pauline Oliveros. This main segment organically flows without a pause for the duration of original recital.

Audio, sonic environment:
Working from original recordings made at Lubomyr Melnyk’s live performance at a monumental industrial site, audio engineer and artist Chris Seifert has crafted a sonic replica of the recital tailored to the physical space at The Grocery – in Dolby Atmos 10-channel, multidirectional surround sound – to mimic the feeling and experience of the original live performance in its full and complex glory.

Dreamachine, visuals, art:
A Dreamachine at the center of the space is based on cut-up artist Brion Gysin’s original schematics. The spinning device creates flickering light to ease participants into a relaxed, mildly hallucinatory, dream-like brain state. Ambient, sound-responsive visual projections by janet galore + Milky Way Matt, and several thematic artworks by O, dear earthling, Boris Indrikov, Jean Sherrard and Rock deepen the meditative environment.

Live music, songs, embodied movement:
Hauntingly visceral performances by The Antenna Project, Vox Vespertinus and Kaoru Okumura unfold the evening and guide us into the main segment.

Photography and videography:
Malixe Photo, TM Sabwen, Briana Jones.
